Are overseas GPs given sufficient support by the Home Office?

According to the British Medical Association (BMA), around 48% of current trainee GPs require visas. Overseas GPs usually complete their training after 3 years in the UK and then either need to return overseas or find employment with an employer that holds a sponsorship licence.
Unfortunately, too many newly qualified GPs struggle to find an employer willing to sponsor them for the 2-year gap before they become eligible to apply for indefinite leave to remain (settlement) in the UK.
Medical professionals are urging the Home Office to shake up Immigration Rules and ease the visa requirements to help address a shortage (partly caused by Brexit) of doctors within the UK. Reform has also been suggested by the Royal College of GPs and ‘umbrella bodies’ (sponsors) are being considered.
Notwithstanding the above, no changes have been made within the Immigration Rules to date and GP practices are encouraged to apply for a sponsorship licence to facilitate the sponsorship of overseas GPs and ease the pressure they are currently under.
For any assistance in relation to sponsoring overseas GPs and/or Health and Care professionals, please contact Patricia Marleau, Head of Immigration Services on 01905 900914 or at patricia@bradleyhayneslaw.co.uk
We look forward to hearing from you!
